Your download has started and may take several minutes to complete.
Brothers and sisters, I am humbled to have the opportunity to speak to you today. I picture you spread across the earth with a common goal and purpose鈥斺痶o increase in knowledge and understanding so that you can support yourselves鈥痑nd鈥痽our families and help build the kingdom of God! I realize many of you are working on your education at great sacrifice. I know the Lord will bless your efforts.

I pray that during the few minutes I have with you today, you will feel God鈥檚 love for you鈥痑nd receive whisperings of the鈥疭pirit meant鈥痜or you.

Have you ever felt like you were living in a storm?鈥疧ur lives can often feel in commotion as we face鈥痷ncertainty about the future,鈥痠ncluding鈥痗hallenges in our families or鈥痺ith finances or health. As I鈥痟ave reflected on鈥痙ifficulties in鈥痮ur lives,鈥疘 have thought about鈥痺hat we might learn from鈥痟urricanes.

Hurricanes鈥痑re massive storms, often hundreds of kilometers wide, with very strong winds.鈥疊ut hurricanes have a distinctive feature:鈥疘n the center of the hurricane is a place of calm鈥痗alled the鈥 鈥渆ye.鈥濃疶here the sun is often鈥痵hining,鈥痑nd winds are very mild.

Interestingly,鈥痚ach鈥痚ye of a hurricane is鈥痵urrounded by鈥痺hat is called the鈥渆yewall.鈥濃疘t is a massive wall of clouds that鈥痗ontain鈥痶he fiercest winds in the hurricane.鈥疘n other words, the strongest winds are closest to the calmest spot. So, if we are standing in the eye of the storm and look around us, all we will see is chaos.

Brothers and sisters, when winds are blowing鈥痑nd鈥痵wirling around us, how can we get to the 鈥渆ye鈥 of our storm and not be discouraged by the most intense challenges鈥痙irectly in front of us?

I would like to suggest four鈥痵teps we can take: stop, pray, remember, and move forward.

Sometimes we鈥痭eed to stop.鈥疻e can stop worrying, stop running faster than we have strength, 1

and take a few鈥痬inutes to鈥痗enter ourselves and鈥痳each heavenward.鈥疎very time we are feeling overwhelmed, we can鈥痯ause, take our eyes off the鈥痗onfusion鈥痶hat surrounds us,鈥痑nd look up to God.鈥
President鈥疪ussell M.鈥疦elson has invited us to鈥渢hink celestial and to envision an eternal reward rather than focus on the excruciating difficulties of the day.鈥 2

Russell M. Nelson, 鈥,鈥 Liahona, Nov. 2023, 118
鈥疘 picture in my mind the Savior,鈥痺ho stood in perfect majesty when He was surrounded by鈥痵torms鈥痮n every side in Pilate鈥檚 court.

As we pray in faith,鈥痠t is as if we are looking up through鈥痶he sunlight鈥痶o a loving Heavenly Father, who knows well the storm we are facing. We can ask Him鈥痜or peace, strength,鈥痑nd鈥痗larity of thought to know how to understand and deal with鈥痑ll that is unclear鈥痑round us.鈥疨resident Nelson taught, 鈥淥ur prayers can be鈥斺痑nd should be鈥斺痩iving discussions with our Heavenly Father.鈥 3

Sometimes we can鈥痵top and pray in a place where the winds are calm and鈥痯eace prevails.鈥疨icture in your mind the peace and serenity of temples of God.鈥疪evelation and clarity of thought can flow when we are in the temple learning the ways of God.鈥疌hapels can鈥痑lso鈥痓e like the eye of the storm.鈥疶hey are places鈥痺here we鈥痗an renew covenants鈥痑nd鈥痚njoy鈥痓elonging with others who are seeking the Savior鈥檚 strength in their own lives.鈥疐inally, we can鈥痵trive to鈥痜ind a place of rest and peace in our own homes.

But,鈥痓rothers and sisters, the Savior has the power to help us鈥痓e centered in Him even when we鈥痗annot鈥痝et to a place of calm.

After a long day of teaching the people, Jesus and鈥疕is Twelve鈥疉postles entered into a ship to sail to the other side of the Sea of Galilee.鈥淎nd there arose a great storm of wind,鈥痑nd the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now鈥痜ull.鈥 4

鈥疉s the鈥疉postles feared for their lives, they found the Savior asleep.鈥疕ow could the Savior be calm enough to sleep when a storm was raging? 5

鈥淎nd he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said鈥痷nto鈥痶he鈥痵ea, Peace, be still.鈥疉nd the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.鈥疉nd he said unto them, why are ye so fearful? How is it that ye have no faith?鈥 6

We can exercise鈥痮ur faith in the living Son of the living God.鈥疶hrough His great and atoning sacrifice, the Savior has鈥痯ower to鈥痟elp us鈥痮vercome鈥痶he storms of this life.鈥疻e can鈥痝o to鈥痶he Father in humble prayer, in the name of Christ, and receive鈥痯eace鈥痑mid鈥痮ur storms.

What can we remember that will help us?鈥疻e can remember times in our lives when we have known that God loves us and is aware of us.鈥疻e can remember when we have received heaven鈥檚 help.

No force of wind can break the bonds of the covenants we鈥痟ave鈥痬ade with Heavenly Father and His Son鈥痠n baptismal fonts and in holy temples.鈥疻hen we strive鈥痶o honor those covenants鈥痓y living His commandments, we鈥痠nvite鈥痶he Savior to鈥痷phold鈥痷s in鈥痮ur鈥痵torms.鈥

We can鈥痑lso鈥痳emember that hurricanes may be massive and strong, but they are temporary.鈥疶hey run out of force and clear skies return.鈥疘f we are anchored to the Savior during the storm,鈥痺e will be鈥痵tronger when the storm passes.

And fourth,鈥痬ove鈥痜orward
As we stop, pray, and remember God鈥檚 goodness to us, we can鈥減ress forward with鈥...鈥痑 perfect鈥痓rightness鈥痮f hope.鈥 7

鈥疶hat hope is not centered in ourselves or鈥痠n鈥痮ur circumstances but in the Savior鈥痑nd His鈥痗apacity鈥痶o strengthen us and direct our path forward.

Several years ago, a few days before Christmas, I was in a hospital where my husband had recently undergone surgery.鈥疘n a matter of a few hours, his health declined rapidly.鈥疶he doctors had no idea what the cause was and鈥痙id not鈥痥now鈥痺hat course to take.鈥疘 watched鈥痟elplessly鈥痑s he could no longer stand or sit up.鈥疻e were鈥痑bout鈥2,000鈥痬iles (3,000鈥痥ilometers)鈥痜rom home,鈥痑nd I was alone. There were so many unanswered questions.鈥疘 felt鈥痩ike I was鈥痠n the middle of a storm over which I had no control.

I stopped and looked for a peaceful place.鈥疘 found a stairwell where few people walked and offered a prayer and a small鈥痵acrifice鈥疘 felt I could offer鈥斺痑 fast for one meal.鈥疘t was all I had the strength for.鈥疶he next morning, as I fasted and walked the halls of the hospital,鈥痬y phone rang鈥 twice 鈥 both calls from loved ones offering me support.鈥疘 realized that鈥痺hat鈥痶he Lord was offering first was not answers or solutions to Bruce鈥檚 precarious health situation;鈥痠nstead,鈥疕e was clearing the skies so that I could feel His love and care.鈥疘鈥痺as in the eye of the storm with the Savior at my side.

Brothers and sisters, as you look at this picture of the Savior holding a lamb, I hope you understand that the lamb鈥疕e is holding is you.鈥

I pray as you face storms in your life, that you will stop, pray for help, remember His goodness, and move forward with鈥痶he knowledge that God is aware of鈥痽ou and will help you.鈥痀ou are His child.鈥疕e鈥痩oves you.

I bear my witness that God lives.鈥疕e sent His鈥疧nly鈥疊egotten Son, Jesus Christ,鈥痶o鈥痓e our Savior and Redeemer.鈥疕e will stand by you as you center your life in Him.鈥疘n the鈥痵acred鈥痭ame of Jesus Christ, amen.
