During the difficulties we all face, it鈥檚 natural to feel sad and overwhelmed. In his general conference message 鈥淒o You Want to be Happy?鈥, Elder Yoon Hwan Choi shared how to find peace and strength during challenges through a covenant relationship with our Heavenly Father.

God wants us to be happy

In the Book of Mormon, we learn that 鈥渕en are that they might have joy.鈥 1

But, this life is our time to gain experience and to learn and grow. The trials we go through can leave us feeling abandoned and far from the joy we鈥檝e been promised. However, Heavenly Father鈥檚 covenant path allows us to find joy throughout our lives, even when we face difficulty.
In this life, we make sacred agreements with Him, called covenants, in which He 鈥渟ets specific conditions, and promises to bless us as we obey those conditions.鈥 2

Keeping covenants gives us strength

Each covenant we make with God comes with conditions we must follow in order to receive the promised blessings. These conditions, while firm, are the opposite of limiting.

We have the opportunity to enter into several covenants that bring us closer to our Heavenly Father. The first covenant we make is baptism by immersion, 4

in which we promise to always remember God and keep His commandments; in return, He promises that we will always have the Holy Ghost as a constant companion. As we continue along the covenant path, we have opportunities to make additional covenants with Him in holy temples.

Elder Choi said, 鈥淜eeping covenants actually makes life easier! Each person who makes covenants in baptismal fonts and in temples鈥攁nd keeps them鈥攈as increased access to the power of Jesus Christ.鈥

Keeping covenants also strengthens us against difficulties we face. 鈥淎s we yoke ourselves to Him,鈥 said Elder Choi, 鈥渨e can do things we couldn鈥檛 do on our own because He can do the things we cannot do for ourselves.鈥

While our challenges won鈥檛 disappear entirely, keeping covenants gives us strength from Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost.

Get back on the path

Only one of God鈥檚 children was ever perfect: our Savior, Jesus Christ. Through His great Atonement, He provided a way for all of us to find our way back to the covenant path when we fail to keep our end of the covenant promise. As we earnestly pray for forgiveness and ask for guidance, God will strengthen us to make things right again.

鈥淎s long as you seek to know of the Savior and pray to Heavenly Father,鈥 said Elder Choi, 鈥淗e will give you a customized answer for you.鈥
